DOP Alumni Home Coming Set for February 11, 2009

The Department of Peace Studies is calling on all its alumni for a homecoming on February 11, 2009. There will be an evening program and reception for the alumni and faculty members to be tendered by the Junior Peace Advocates. Please dissiminate the information. Human Rights Lecture for December 18, 2008

The Senior Class of the Department of Peace Studies is set to sponsor a lecture to be delivered by a representative from the Commission on Human Rights on December 18, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The theme of the Lecture is on the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and how it relates to the Rights of Filipino Migrant Workers. The issues affecting the Filipino Diaspora and Migrant Workers and their rights will be discussed. Interested persons who wish to attend this lecture must notify the persons in-charge since the College of Education Audiovisual Room can accommodate only as much. Interested persons please contact the following persons at the Departmental office during office hours: Mr. Jay Nuarin, the student assistant working at the department, Ms. Ellen Joy Recato, the President of JPA and Mr. Romulo Federico of the Volunteers for Peace. Venue of the Lecture: Audiovisual Room, College of Education, BU Main Campus, Legazpi City.

E-Registration for Second Semester

All students at the Department of Peace Studies are reminded that the issuance of ADVISING SLIPS for the e-registration will be on October 22-23, 2008. Your clearance papers, settlement of organizational obligations and submission of academic requirements are required prior to issuance of the Advising Slip. You will not be allowed to register without the Slip. Please see Dr. Rosana at the Departmental Office during office hours. Please be punctual.

What is a Bicolano?

The Bicolano is the term use to describe the Philippine's 5th largest ethno-linguistic group. They speak a language known as Bikol, a Malayo-Polynesian language. They inhabit the Southeastern portion of Luzon spread over five civil provinces namely; Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, and Masbate. There are five chartered cities – Naga, Iriga, Legazpi, Ligao, Sorsogon City , Tabaco and Masbate City. The Southeastern Portion of Luzon is also called Bicol Region or simply Bicolandia. The Bicolanos are not so different from other ethno-linguistic groups in the Philippines. What distinguishes the Bicolanos are the following: their love for spicy foods, their ardent devotion to Our Lady of Penafrancia [Bicolanos are devout Roman Catholics], and their affinity with Mt. Mayon Volcano, a natural landmark. These three are iconic of the Bicolano people. Bicol, was in ancient times called Tierra de Ibalon a land of rolling hills, valleys, and coasts. The region has no pronounced division of climate. Rain is plentiful and spread over year-round. The valleys are fertile and the climate friendly, but vulnerable to typhoons and tropical storms. Bicolanos are known for their friendliness, religiosity and hard work.
