First Peace Education Capability Building Seminar for Teachers and Instructors

The BU-CSSP and Its Department of Peace Studies, in cooperation with the Office of the Vice-President for Production of Bicol University will hold the FIRST PEACE EDUCATION CAPABILITY BUILDING SEMINAR FOR TEACHERS AND INSTRUCTORS on September 4-5, 2008. The venue was originally set at the Entrepreneruship Hall but was moved to The Science Auditorium Building at the Main Campus. This in order to provide the participants more access and amenities.

The seminar was endorsed by the COMMISSION ON HIGHER EDUCATION Regional Office V and by the DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Regional Office V. The activity was also supported and endorsed by the President of Bicol University Dr. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya.

Secretary Hermogenes Esperon Jr. is the keynote speaker and will be duly represented by Undersecretary Pedro Cesar Ramboanga of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP).

A Never Ending Fascination

Mt. Mayon Volcano at a Silvery Sunset.

Indeed what else could I say? God has blessed me for having been born and lived in a land filled with beauty. And I would say that I am proud of Mt. Mayon Volcano. Many times I have taken for granted its beauty but there are times when life is not in hurry, that I could renew and appreciate the majesty and beauty of this unique mountain. Every working day as I drove from my home City of Tabaco to the University where I work in Legazpi City, I always pass by this volcano. The highway that connects Tabaco City with Legazpi City is a strech of class A road that spans 30 kilometers, 45 minutes drive in the abscence of traffic congestion and an hour if the chokepoint is filled with commuters. But the drive from Legazpi to Tabaco is always a pleasant experience. Breath-taking views of Mt. Mayon Volcano, of the vast Albay Gulf, the mountains, the offshore Islands, valleys, hills and rice fields. This brings me to the realization that creation though affected and strained by the originl sin of Adam and Eve continues to exude beaty and delight. Giving praise to God it's creator and delighting the hearts of the children of men.

2nd Round Table Meeting for the Proposed Bicol Consortium on Peace Education

The second round-table discussion for the Proposed Bicol Consortium on Peace Education was held at the Ateneo de Naga Univerity on August 5, 2008. The ADNU Center for Community Development served as the venue for the said activity. The first round table meeting was held last May 2008 at the BU Department of Peace Studies. The Director IV of PIDO - OPAPP Mr. Rolando Asuncion was present to help with the meeting. Dr. Rosana facilitated the meeting. Theaccomplishment of the meeting consisted of the following: (1) Critiquing of the Scanning Instrument; (2) Planning for the workshop that will eventually help put flesh to the Consortium Initiative. The OPAPP promised to provide assistance as to the logistical aspects of the proposed workshop; (3) Discussions on how the consortium could become more relevant in light of the newly signed implementing guidelines on the integration of Peace Education to the basic and tertiary education. Bicol University as represented by the Department of Peace Studies through Dr. Herbert Rosana was tasked to prepare the initial workshop plan, it was also suggested that the members will be requested to help critique the plan and communication has to be done by email.

Symposium on Climate Change and Disaster Management Held July 23, 2008

In response to the needs of the times, the VOLUNTEERS FOR PEACE, a newly organized college based organization, sponsored the symposium with the theme: "Disaster Management in Light of Climate Change. Implications for the Province of Albay. The Symposium was attended by the Students of the Department of Peace Studies, the members of the Volunteers for Peace and the A.B. Sociology Students. The Resourse Person for the symposium was Mr. Cedric Daep of the PDCC or the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council of the Province of Albay. The Dean of CBEM and Campus Executive Director for the BU Daraga Campus, Dr. Liwayway Ables generously allowed us the use of the ENTREP Hall.

1st Peace Education Capability Building Seminar for Teachers and Instructors

Bicol University through its Department of Peace Studies will hold the 1st Peace Education Capability Building Seminar for Teachers and Instructors on September 4-5, 2008 at the BU Entrepreneurship Hall, BU Daraga, Albay Campus. The Seminar will seek answers to the following questions:

• How can a climate conducive to peace and development be promoted in the Bicol Region through education

• What is peace education
• What contribution can peace education bring to Bicol
• What methods and techniques for the integration of peace concepts in the teaching of basic education subjects are implemented?
• What effective approaches can be used to evaluate the teaching of peace concepts

This seminar is designed for:

Ø Teachers – Teachers in the elementary schools and secondary schools. Master Teachers and leading teachers in Social Studies, Values Education, Guidance / counseling, and related fields are most welcome.

Ø Instructors – Instructors / Professors in Colleges of Education, Social Sciences, Humanities and related fields are also welcome to participate.
